About

camelcity is a nickname for our home base, the city of Winston-Salem, NC. The name originated from the manufacture of Camel cigarettes (We have no association with the Camel cigarette brand), a primary employment of residents of Winston-Salem at one time. Now it’s just a nickname. camelcity is not intended to encourage anyone to smoke cigarettes, just to acknowledge our heritage. People here take pride in what they do, whether it is making cigarettes or programming for the web, and we take pride in living among them.

There are a few other reasons we chose the name camelcity:

  • The camel is the symbol of Perl , a programming language that has always been one of our specialties.
  • Camels are symbols of adaptability. Able to live in the desert, and to carry their own water, they exemplify endurance in a harsh environment. If you want to cross a desert, a camel can get you there. In the world of the Internet, camelcity.com strives to do the same.
